CHANTS FROM VALAAM: SELECTED HYMNS FROM THE SERVICES AND TRIODIA AND HYMNS OF THE ALL-NIGHT VIGIL, Choir of the Brotherhood of Valaam The Valaam Monastery in the far northwest corner of Russia is an ancient center of Russian Spirituality from where missionaries brought the Orthodox faith to Alaska and the rest of America. The monastery has its own rich tradition of chant, which was interrupted under the Soviet yoke. And now, as that tradition (and the monastery itself) are in the process of being restored, a very interesting development has occurred, which is reflected on this recording: instead of singing in unison or in an improvised triadic harmony (as most Russians do), the brethren sing Valaam and other Russian monastic chants with an isonan underlying drone that is characteristic of Greek Byzantine singing. Apart from resulting in a very different sound, this manner of singing underscores the underlying similarities between the Byzantine and Slavic chant traditions.
