THE CHURCH OF THE ANCIENT COUNCILS: THE DISCIPLINARY WORK OF THE FIRST FOUR ECUMENICAL COUNCILS, Archbishop Peter L'Huillier The first four ecumenical councils defined trinitarian and christological dogma in terms which ever since have been regarded as normative by the major Christian confessions of East and West. The author translates each canon into clear and readable English on the basis of the best modern critical editions; he explains the sometimes ambiguous terminology of the original texts; he explores the historical circumstances which gave rise to these canons in the first place; and he also indicates some of the way in which they have been reinterpreted (and sometimes misinterpreted) in later centuries. 352pp

THE COUNCIL OF TRULLO REVISITED (Kanonika, Volume 6), edited by George Nedungatt and Michael, with an introduction by the Vatican Library's noted Eastern scholar, Vittorio Peri Featherstone This work is a compendium of modern scholarship on this much discussed council. The seriousness of the study is exemplified by the inclusion of the full text of one hundred and two canons of the Trullan Code in a critical Greek text (Ioannou) with a corresponding revised Latin translation and a fine modern English translation, both done from the critical Greek text. This accomplishment alone makes the work valuable for serious scholars. The rest of the volume is devoted to seven scholarly studies on various aspects of the council contributed by Spyros N. Troianos, Vittorio Peri, Peter Landau, Nicholas Dura, Constantin Pitsakis, Heninz Ohme and Michel van Esbroeck. 466pp 7 Articles - 2 in English, 2 in French, 1 in Italian, 2 in German

I CONFESS ONE BAPTISM...: AN INTERPRETATION AND APPLICATION OF CANON VII OF THE SECOND ECUMENICAL COUNCIL BY KOLLYVADES AND CONSTANTINE OIKONOMOS, Protopresbyter George D. Metallinos, Ph.D., D. Th., parish priest and Adjunct Professor, University of Athens; translated by the Priest-monk Seraphim I Confess One Baptism is a translation and edited version, with additional material of the book in Greek by the same title, which was published in Athens in 1983. In I Confess One Baptism, the Protopresbyter George Metallinos introduces the reader to the Orthodox mind of the Kollyvades and Constantine Oikonomos, important Greek Orthodox Churchmen and scholars of the 18th and 19th centuries. He analyzes Canon VII (which regulates the manner of receiving converts) of the 2nd Ecumenical Council, convened in Constantinople in 381, on the basis of the writings of the Kollyvades and Constantine Oikonomos, heretofore little known in the English-speaking world. Reception of all converts by baptism in the Church is established as the historically normative practice, with Chrismation only, as a rare and judicious phenomenon of "economia.'. The priciples of acrivia and economia are defined, their scope delineated, and their application, both past and current, explained. This boo is certain to trouble the waters ... and the consceiences of Church leaders and laity alike. 143pp

INDEX ANALYTICUS: CODICIS CANONUM ECCLESIARUM ORIENTALIUM (Kanonika, Volume 2), Ivan Zuzek The Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium was promulgated by Pope John II on October 18, 1992. Kanonika offers this Index Analyticus as an instrument of consultation and study of the Codex especially in faculties of canon law and by scholars and all others who will have to use the new Code. At the solemn presentation of the Code during the 28th general congregation of the Synod of Bishops on October 25, 1990 the Holy Father stated that the Catholic Church has now "one single corpus iuris canonici," consisting of the Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium (OCEO), the Codex Iuris Canonici (CIC), and the apostolic constitution on the Roman Curia Pastor Bonus. The pope then went on to affirm the need for the comparative study of the two Codes, especially in canon law faculties, in order to have "that mastery of canonical science which fully corresponds to the academic degrees issues by these faculties." The present Index is meant to be an aid in such comparative study and thus to be of service to the whole Church and not only to the 21 Eastern Catholic Churches, for which OCEO is now common law. The Index contains almost one thousand entries. A few of these are proper to the Code of the Latin Church CIC but are included in the Index to facilitate its use for those who are unfamiliar with the terminology of CCEO. On the other hand terms which are proper to CIC and have no coresponding terms in CCEO have been omitted, as for example episcopal conferences. For the rest, a auick look through the book will make clear to the attentive reader the criteria which have been used in compiling it. They do no differ substantially from what is customary in such working aids. 375pp

THE SYNOD OF BISHOPS OF CATHOLIC ORIENTAL CHURCHES, Paul Pallath The synodal structure of Catholic Oriental Churches is of prime importance both for the Catholic and non-Catholic Churches. In fact, the future of ecumenism itself depends on the question whether authentic synoldal governance is possible in those Oriental Churches taht are in full communion with the Catholic Church. A proper understanding of the synodal governance of Oriental Churches is also important for the future structuring of the national Conference of Bishops of the Latin Church. After establishing the theologico-canonical foundation of synodal structure on the bais of 'sacred canons' and Second Vatican Council, the author analyses in a comprehensive manner the Synod of Bishops of Catholic Oriental Churches according to "Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium." The comparison of the Synod of Bishops with the Council of Hierarchs of the metropolitan "sui iuris" Church and the Conference of Bishops of the Latin Church is particularly interesting. There is no doubt that this book is a great contribution to the Universal Church and can be highly useful to all interested in a comparative study of the two Codes of the Catholic Church. 234pp

UNDERSTANDING THE EASTERN CODE (Kanonika, Volume 8), Ivan Zuzek In this single volume, Kononika publishes sixteen valuable studies of Ivan Zuzek, S.J., with the intent of offering to scholars a handy scientific instrument for a better understanding of the Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium. Although authers often refer to many of these studies, not all of them are always easily accessible, especially those reproduced in proceedings, sometimes only for internal use, of various meetings of canonists. Compiled in one volume, these studies can now be considered together. There is no doubt that they will shed much light on many fundamental aspects of the Code, or important sections of it. Moreover, this book will provide the reader with insights from one who was directly involved as Secretary of the Pontifical Commission in the enormous amount of work that paved the way, often painfully, towards the promulgation of the Eastern Code. This work will also prove to be extremely valuable for the first-hand documentation contained in some of these studies, which are meant to complement what has been published elsewhere on Vatican's proceedings dealing with canonical matters. While two studies (6 and 8) are published here for the first time, the others are reprinted, according to the author's express wish, following the text in which they originally appeared, without modifications. The simple chronological order in which the studies, originally appeared has been retained in preference to any other order, which seemed rather artificial or even misleading. 480pp

CANON LAW AS MINISTRY: FREEDOM AND GOOD ORDER FOR THE CHURCH, James A. Coriden Esteemed canon lawyer, educator and writer James Coriden brings his more than forty years' experience to his new book that offers a bold and refreshing vision of the role of law within the Catholic Church - not as an instrument of control but as a guide and guarantee of freedom for individual believers. Coriden argues that church law is primarily a ministry within the church, a ministry that ought to serve freedom first and good order second. He views "church" as a local community situated within specific cultural, economic and political circumstances. And a law that serves global order while ignoring the needs of the local church runs the risk of trampling on freedom and undermining the peace of the church. This informed and passionate argument for canon law as a ministry rather than as an instrument of control in today's church will be food for thought for: canon lawyers and those who shape church law; all persons, inside and outside the church who are concerned about the role of law and institutional reforms; interested persons in the pew. 256pp
