History and Introduction (TOP OF PAGE)
ASCETICISM, edited by Vincent L. Wimbush (Union Theological Seminary), and Richard Valantasis (St. Louis University) From meditation and fasting to celibacy and anchoritism, the ascetic impluse is an enduring and complex phenomenon throughout history. Offering a sweeping view of this elusive and controversial aspect of religious life and culture, Ascetism looks at the ascetic impluse from a unique vantage point. A cross-cultural, cross-religious, and multi-disciplinary exploration, these essays provide a broad historical and comparative perspective on ascetism - a subject rarely studeied outside the context of individual religious traditions. 6 halftones, 1 linecut. 640pp $130.00 Cloth (Oxford)
THE CHRISTIAN MYSTERY: FROM PAGAN MYTH TO CHRISTIAN MYSTICISM, by Louis Bouyer; translated by Illtyd Trethowan In opposition to theologians as otherwise dissimiliar as Albert Ritschl and Karl Barth, who hold that there is nothing specifically Christian about mysticism, and that it is fundamentally opposed to the Gospel, Louis Bouyer contends in this study that "the mystery of Christ, irreducible to any other, is the only true object of the only mysticism rightly so called: Christian mysticism." Through a detailed comparative study of the use of the word "mystery" in the mystery religions, Greek philosopohical texts, the Bible, the Fathers, and the Western mystical tradition up to own age, Bouyer shows that there is a unique content to the Christian use of the term, a distinctively Christian mysticism, and that the herart of this experience is fundamentally related to the suffering of Christ for our salvation. 320pp $53.00 Hardcover (T&T Clark) $30.00 Paper (St Bede's)
CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE HERITAGE, by Charles J. Healey, SJ Beginning with the writings of the Apostolic Fathers and concluding with the Second Vatican Council, this introduction to the spiritual heritage of the Christian community - Roman Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant - focuses on the particular ways in which Christian men and women have come to understand, value, and direct their lives as disciples of Jesus of Nazareth and have expressed it in their own words. As such it enables us to recognize and appreciate the rich variety and complexity of Christian spirituality as well as the various methods of prayer which it has inspired. All the classics are represented here from Ignatius of Antioch to Pseudo-Dionysius and John of the Cross, from Symeon the New Theologian to Julian of Norwich and C.S. Lewis. Those seeking an overview of the various schools and movements which shaped Christian spirituality down through the centuries will find much to ponder here. 447pp $23.00 Paper (Alba House)
CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY: GOD'S PRESENCE THROUGH THE AGES, by Richard Woods, O.P. Several histories and handbooks of Christian spirituality have been published within the past few years and most provide excellent overviews and resources for further study. "Christian Spirituality" differs from the others in at least one major respect. In order to provide a useful textbook for adults, the author has attempted to situate in a single volume the development of Christian spirituality in the life and history of the Church as a whole as well as in view ofmajor events in the wider world. "What is most attractive about the volume is the attention given to the whole range of Christian spirituality. Woods' survey extends from biblical roots to the present day, with an eye to the third millennium. He treats spiritualities of the Western and Eastern churches, examining figures and movements representative of Catholic, Protestant, Byzantine, and Orthodox spiritualities. He is quick to draw attention to the concerns of and contributions of lay men and women, as well as those of clergy and religious who have been central in most renderings of thehistory. This volume is recommended not just for experts but for all interested in the history of Christian spirituality..." - Michael Downey, Spirituality Today $17.00 Paper (Christian Classics)

A DIFFERENT CHRISTIANITY: EARLY CHRISTIAN ESOTERCISIM AND MODERN THOUGHT (SUNY Series in Western Esoteric Traditions), by Robin Amis Amis tells us that Christianity possesses an inner tradition that has never been common knowledge in the Western world. This Esoteric Christianity was once known as the "Royal Way" and has barely survived except in places like the monasticism of the Eastern Chruch. The inner psychological work revealed in these teachings contribute to the goal of "inner autonomy of spirit." This book offers us the missing pieces that can revive the teaching of great power and which is made known in the 20th century through the legacies of Theophan the Recluse, G.I. Gurdjieff and other master of wisdom. $20.00 Paper (State University of New York)

MATROLOGY: A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF WRITINGS BY CHRISTIAN WOMEN FORM THE FIRST TO THE FIFTEENTH CENTURIES, by Andrew Kadel Matrology is a bibliography - the first of its kind - of nearly 250 women writers form the first fifteen centuries of the Christian era. It includes every Christian woman who wrote before 1500 c.e. and lists all of her writings that have appeared in print since 1800. The past decade or so has seen a boom in the publication of translations and editions of texts by women, and Matrology is intended to enable anyone to get hold of these writings, most of which are more available than most people think. It is meant to be useful to the broadest possible audience: undergraduates and general readers as well as scholars in a number of different disciplines. Materials that would be usable only by specialists, such as manuscripts and rare books, are not included. Rather than provide detailed bibliographical and technical information about authors and texts, Matrology considers the needs of nonspecialists first, while maintaining enough information for scholars of all sorts to gain access to original texts and technical discussions. Each entry begins with a brief description of the author or authors it contians. English editions of the full text are always listed first, if they are available, followed by whatever selections may exist in recent anthologies. These are followed by a list of critical editions and other editions of the text in its original language. Finally, there are translations into modern languages other than English, which may be important for their introductory material and bibliography or useful to those who have more difficulty with Greek or Latin, let's say, than with French or German. At the end of the book is a bibliography of secondary sources and both an Alphabetical Index and a Chronological Index. 191pp $30.00 Hardcover (Continuum International)
THE ORIGINS OF THE CHRISTIAN MYSTICAL TRADITION: FROM PLATO TO DENYS, by Andrew Louth Scholars of the patristic era have paid more attention to the dogmatic tradition in their period than to the development of Christian mystical theology. This book aims to redress the balance. Recognizing that the intellectual form of this tradition was decisively influenced by Platonic ideas of the soul's relationship to God, the author begins with an examination of Plato and the Platonic tradition up to Plotinus, paying particular attention to Philo whose marriage of hellenism and the Bible was widely influential among the Fathers. The discussion of the Fathers which follows shows how the mystical tradition is at the heart of their thought and how the dogmatic tradition both moulds and is the reflection of mystical insights and concerns. Origen, Gregory of Nyssa, and Eenys the Areopagite in the East and Augustine in the West are considered in this light, and so also is the contribution of the monastic movement in the fourth and fifth centuries. Concluding chapters discuss the relationship between patristic mystical theology and that of St. John of the Cross and assess the extent to which Platonism is transformed by its contact with the Christian tradition. This book will be of particular interest to those who are concerned with the well-springs of their own prayer, and especially those who seek to understand the diverse, and often conflicting, influences that are to be found in Christian spirituality. 215pp $22.00 Paper (Clarendon)

ABOUT CHRIST AND THE CHURCH (Originally published in Russian under the title, Home Conversations about Christ and the Church, by the Iahtsmen Agency, Moscow, 1995), by Alexander Men; translated by Fr. Alexis Vinogradov The spiritual legacy of Fr. Alexander is large and varied: books, lectures, sermons, words of counsel at general confessions, conversatiions around a table. This form derived from the very personality of Fr. Alexander as well as from his pastoral concerns and the temper of the times. His care of souls was marked by personal, intimate spiritual communion, and the time of persecution rendered this flexible form particularly important for preaching and spiritual direction. The form of the parish's infrastructure was the "gatherings." And this name was chosen by Father deliberately so that the criminal words "group" or "seminar" would not suddenly leak out by accident. These gatherings were in fact the usual means of meeting with Father outside the church. - Mark Weiner 111pp $7.00 Paper (Oakwood)

AGES OF THE SPIRITUAL LIFE, by Paul Evdokimov; revised translation by Michael Plekon and Alexis Vinogradov Evdokimov draws from the great currents of Christian spiritual life, revealing how modern mankind may recover the voices of silence, prayer, and contemplation. It is the spirituality of the Great Tradtition of the Church, but refreshingly new, rooted in the Bible and liturgy but entwined with everyday life, a spirituality that is truly "for the life of the world." Models and teachers are the desert fathers and mothers and the monastics. The true pattern of the spiritual life for us in our time means incorporating into our lives the basics of the monastics' life: prayers, liturgy, scripture, work, love and care for the neighbor. The spiritual life, we learn here, needs to find its particualr shape in the demands and context of our time, our lives, not those of another century. Thus, Christ transforms us and our age. 262pp $15.00 Paper (SVS Press)

CHRIST IS CALLING YOU!: A COURSE IN CATACOMB PASTORSHIPO, by Fr. George Calciu "The time has come, young man, for you to hear a voice which has been calling you....." With these words, right after his release from prison in 1978, Fr. George Calciu began a series of seven weekly homilies to the youth of communist Romania. Hundreds of young people risked their lives to hear him, climbing over the walls when the authorities tried to keep them away. Fr. George knew this would mean his imprisonment and probable death, but he was prepared. Already he had endured sixteen years in the anti-human communist prison system. On his release from prison, he gave these homilies out of his desire to lay down his life for Christ and for young people lost in materialism. Purified in a crucible of suffering, his fiery sould cried out to them, awakening them to the purpose of existence and changing their lives forever. He was again incarcerated in 1979, and after his release in 1984 he was exiled to America. When he returned to Romania in 1989 10,000 young people came to pray with him, despite concerted efforts by the authorities to stop this event. Fr. Calciu's sermons and a recent extensive interview are presented here, offering a glimpse into the heart and soul of a genuine pastor and a living confessor of Christ. His sermons render an urgency and set the tone for contemporary Christian pastors under impossible conditions, when no human logic can prevail, but only direct dependence on God. 294pp $10.00 Paper (St Paisius Missionary School)

CHRISTIANITY FOR THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY: THE PROPHETIC WRITINGS OF ALEXANDER MEN, edited by Ann Shukman, Elizabeth; foreword by Jean-Marie Cardinal Lustiger Father Alexander Men, who was assassinated in 1990, was by any standards one of the most remarkable priests to come out of the modern Russian Orthodox Church. His influence as a parish priest, spiritual guide, and theologian was enormous, and his opposition to fundamentalist trends, his openness to the world and tolerance towards other faiths and denominations won him many followers and, sadly, enemies. Illustrating his life and and work, "Christianity for the Twenty-First Century" examines three of Men's concerns: the intellectual problems confronting Christians today, including the knowledge of God; the problem of evil; and the pressure of the scientific scepticism and the place of Christianity among other world faiths. It also revelas how Men shared particularly Russian worries on the future of relgious expression in his country. Men had a vision for the future of Christianity that was both realistic and hopeful. He saw no automatic evolutionary progress, but felt the necessity for individuals to take responsibility for their part in the battle between good and evil in the world. Christians, he argued, should realize that they were still only beginners, in the spiritual "Stone Age," and should look forward with hope and conviction to the future. 224pp $20.00 Paper (Continuum International)

DRINKING FROM THE HIDDEN FOUNTAIN: A PATRISTIC BREVIARY, ANCIENT WISDOM FOR TODAY'S WORLD, by Thomas Spidlik; translated by Paul Drake Second only to Scripture as the staple of monastic lectio Divina, the insights of the Fathers draw Christians to the essentials of the faith and its practice in daily life. By presenting a passage for meditation each day, this volume offers an introduction both to the Fathers and to lectio. It speaks not only to the seeker but to those who guide others along the paths of the spirit. Thomas Spidlik' Patristic Breviary provides not a prayer book for daily use - Orthodox, Catholicism and Anglicanism already have their liturgical collections for this purpose - but nuggets mined from the Fathers of the Church for meditative reading. Spidli chooses to follow the secular calendar rather than the Church's calendar. Thus, he begins with January 1; many of the meditations for the beginning of the year involve creation. The selections for June involve marriage, and the readings for the time around Labor Day happen to touch on work. Spidlik's Patristic sources are briefly but usefully described in a concluding note "On Authors and Texts." 447pp $20.00 Paper (Cistercian)

THE HEART OF SALVATION: THE LIFE AND TEACHING OF SAINT THEOPHAN THE RECLUSE, by Saint Theophan the Recluse; translated by Esther Williams; introduction by George A. Maloney, S.J. First a schoolteacher, then a bishop, then a hermit, Theophan the Recluse was one of the Russian holy men canonized in 1988 and one of the greatest of the "startzi" - teachers of spirituality and of the prayer of the heart - who have played such an important role in keeping the spiritual doctrines of the early fathers alive in the Russian Orthodox Church. From his hermit's cell Theophan aided thousands in their spiritual quest. When he died, the great Russian monastery of Saint Panteleimon on Mount Athos published his voluminous works and a book about his life. This book is based on that with additional commentary relating his ideas to the contemporary religious situation, as his work was of great important in place, in time and in its cogency to the whole question of the relation of early Christian thought to the modern situation. In addition to the contemporary relevance of his spiritual teachings, Theophan's protest against Russia's departure from the old theistic Christian world-view for one based on the physical sciences... is all the more meaningful now that this process is beginning to reverse. Explains esoteric doctrines never previously published in English in ways comprehensible to the modern mind. 183pp $18.00 Paper (Praxis Institute)

THE ILLNESS AND CURE OF THE SOUL IN THE ORTHODOX TRADITION, by Archimandrite Hierotheos Viachos The author's main conviction which permeats this present book is that Orthodoxy does not provide a "system" of moral conduct but a therapeutic treatment which cures the innermost aspect of man's personality. Archimandrite Hierotheos maintains that he dies not innovate by stating this, but that he just highlights a central teaching of the Fathers of the Church: man's soul suffers malady which distorts his relationship with God, his fellow-men and even nature. Church is a Hospital which recieves all people and cures their spiritual illness. The cure of the soul is the "end" of the Orthodox way and it can only be attained through the Orthodox therapeutic method - which is asceticism, as it is expressed in the neptic tradition of the Church. 184pp $12.00 Paper (Birth of the Theotokos Monastery)

LECTIO DIVINA: AN ANCIENT PRAYER THAT IS EVER NEW, by Mario Massini What is lectio divina? Is is Bible study, spiritual reading, prayer, or all three? Is it only for "religious" people or can it be practice by everyone? These are just a few of the many questions that this small volume seeks to address in a down-to-earth and very practical way. "Lectio divina is a reading, on an individual or communallevel,of a more or less lengthy passage of Scripture, received as the Word of God which leads, at the promting of the Holy Spirit, to meditation, prayer and contemplation." Its rediscovery runs parallel to a return to the study of the Bible on the part of the faithful. Both follow the recommendations of the Second Vatican Council. Originally practiced in monastic circles, today lectio divina represents a true grace of God with which to initiate all the faithful to a more fruitful life of prayer. The text ofered here responds to this new situation by presenting, in an easy-to-read and systematic way the "meaning" and the "steps" involved in the practice of lectio divina: listening to and interpreting the biblical text (=lectio), deepening and taking to oneself its message (=meditatioio), sharing it with others =collatio), transforming the word of God into prayer (=oratio and contemplatio), and finally witnessing to the word as a committed Christian (=operatio). 96pp $6.00 Paper (Alba House)

Nikon speaks to all those seeing guidance on the difficult path to salvation. He balances exhortation and reproach with encouragement and consolation, instructing the reader in the fundamentals of the Christian struggle: "Recognize your sinfulness, your indebtedness before God ... submit yourself totally to God's good will ... endure sorrows without murmuring ... place all your hope for salvation on God's mercy and not on the 'correctness' of your deeds ... fear a high opinion of yourself ... only through humility does a person become as one spirit with the Lord." Written in the 50s and 60s, these letters of spiritual direction provide a contemporary distallation of the age old wisdom of the Church, at once simple and profound. 132pp $9.00 Paper (Nikodemos Orthodox Publications Society)
THE LIFE IN CHRIST, Nicholas Cabasilas; translated by Carmino J. Decatangaro; with an introduction by Boris Bobrinskoy The Life in Christ by Nicholas Cabasilas is a remarkable product of Byzantium's last great flowering of theology. At a time when secular humanism was increasingly asserting man's complete autonomy, Cabasilas proclaimed that man's true life lies not in himself, but in Christ. For him, man's redemption in Jesus Christ is not just a matter of history, which can be elucidated simply by scholarly endeavor. It is a saving event in which man is called to participate here and now, in body and spirit as well as intellect, through the sacramental life of the Church. The present translation makes this devotional classic available for the first time in English, while the extensive introduction by Boris Bobrinskoy assesses its place within the history of eastern spirituality. Cabasilas' Commentary on the Divine Liturgy is also available. Like The Life in Christ, it is imbued with fervent sacramental mysticism which draws on that enduring source of Orthodox spirituality: the Church's liturgical life. 229pp $12.00 Paper (SVS Press)

LISTEN PRISON!, by Zoya Krakhmalnikova; preface by Vladimir Rusak Under the Soviet regime Zoya Krakhmalnikova's efforts to provide her spiritually hungry compatriots with anthologies of Christian readigns cost her a year in prison and three years in exile. This experience inspired Krakhmalnikova, a journalist who converted to the Orthodox Faith as an adult, to write Listen Prison! in which, from the confines of her cell, she chronicles her spiritual odyssey from the darkness of the soul's captivity - to the world, to fear, to self-love - into the light of freedom which Christ promised to his disciples. But that Freedom, Krakhmalnikova discovers, is granted only to those who are willing to walk into the Babylonian furnace, who totally surrender themselves to God. The Christian community here in the West, as the author observes, has shown itself particularly adept at adjusting the Gosple to the times; at making Christiantiy comfortable, convenient; at prreserving form while neglecting essence. If it is to partake of the fire which Christ came to kindle upon the earth, and not be trampled underfoot like a salt which has lost its savor, it must embrace that Christian maximalism which emerges from the pages of this book. 133pp $7.00 Paper (Nikodmos Orthodox Publication Society)

THE MEANING OF SPIRITUAL STRUGGLE (Asceticism) AND MYSTICISM IN THE ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN CHURCH: The Living Theology of Orthodoxy (Point of Faith Series, Number 8), Orthodox Christianity has no mysticism in the Western sense of the word. All Orthodox spiritual work and theology are practical, as well as mystical. Indeed, the mysticism of Orthodoxy is pragmatic and communal. Since, however, the word "mysticism" is often misused in relation to the standard Orthodox Christian spiritual life, a clear definition of the proper terms is needed in an Orthodox context. This work, actually titled The Living Theology of Orthodoxy, provides a profound scriptural and patristic explanation of the meaning of the concepts of asceticism or "spiritual struggle." It is especially valuable in refuting the attacks of "evangelical" Protestants against aspects of Orthodox Christian spiritual life. $4.00 Paper (Synaxis Press)

This book by Bishop Jean of Saint-Denis, founder of the French Orthodox Church, deals directly with the problems of prayer in today's world and describes different techniques by which modern man can hope to touch on the highest levels of prayer, binding them into a complete method that begins in the foothills of verbal prayer and ends in the high peaks of what the Eastern Church, using the words of Saint Paul, call 'unceasing prayer.' ON PRAYER, by Archimandrite Sophrony (Sakharov) This collection of articles on prayer and the spiritual life, together with some of the author's own prayers, is a moving testimony to the relevance of Christ, who, for Archimandrite Sophrony, is 'all, and in all, the beginning and the ending' of all things (cf. Col. iii 11; Rev. i;8). Archimadrite Sophrony was born in Russia on 22 September, 1896. He trained as an artist at the Moscow School of Fine Art. After the October Revolution he settled in France, where he continued to work as an artist and exhibited in the Paris salons. For a brief period he read theology at the St. Sergius Institute but in the autumn of 1925 left to become a monk at the Monastery of St. Panteleimon on Mount AThos in Northern Greece. In 1930 he was ordainded deacon by Bishop Nikoai Velimirovich. About this time he met Staretz Silouan, who became his spiritual guide. After the Staretz' death in 1938, Fr. Sophrony spent seven years living as a hermit in the 'desert' of AThos, frist at Karoulia, then in a cave near St. Paul's Monastery. He became a priest in 1941 and soon after was elected spiritual confessor for several of the monastic communities on the Athonite peninsula. On returning to France in 1947 he edited and published the writings Silouan had entrusted to him, adding an introduction. Because of serious illness he was unable to return to the Holy Mountain. In the spring of 1959, helped by friends, he moved to England with a small group of men and women. For many years he received people from all walks of life for spiritual direction. In his latter years he was particularly attentive to those afflicted with cancer. Archimandrite Sophrony died on July 11, 1993 at Tolleshunt Knights, in the community which he had founded and inspired till the end of his days. His life is marked by the tragic events of this century, but more profoundly so by his meeting with Staretz Silouan, whom he lived to see canonized. 208pp $20.00 Hardcover w/dustjacket $11.00 Paper (SVSy Press)

PRAYING THE NAME OF JESUS: THE ANCIENT WISDOM OF THE JESUS PRAYER, by Wilfrid Stinissen Profoundly rooted in the Scriptures and first practiced centuries ago by the great teachers of the Eastern Orthodox tradition, the Jesus Prayer, with its many variations, is among the world's most ancient forms of devotion. But how does it apply to today's world? Why does it remain so popular among men and women, lay and religious, from all over the world and in every Christian religious tradition? With an eye toward the issues facing contemporary Christians, Father Wilfrid Stinissen shows readers the underlying reason why the Jesus Prayer continues to hold universal appeal for Orthodox and Catholics, Anglicans and Protestants, and all kinds of Christians of both Eastern and Western traditions - it is a sign of hope in an age of anxiety, a beacon of light in a world of uncertainty. The prayer, in its simplicity and clarity, brings the new life granted by the Holy Spirit into vivid focus. Easily understood yet deeply profound, this book traces the evolution of the Jesus Prayer from its beginnings in the tradition of the Desert Fathers and the words of the Old and New Testaments through Christianity's expansion into the second millennium. In penetrating style, Father Stinissen demonstrates how the Jesus Prayer sums up the whole of the Gospel, bringing the body and the heart closer to Christ. THE LADDER OF THE BEATITUDES, by Jim Forest "Even in a culture in which the Bible is a dark and unmapped continent to millions of people, if you say 'Blessed are...' someone is likely to add the next few words of the first beatitude, 'the poor in spirit.' With only a little effort all the beatitudes can be memorized. Once learned by heart, we carry within us for the rest of our lives a short summary of the teaching of Jesus Christ: the whole Gospel in a grain salt." - Jim Forest Drawing on stories from the lives of the saints, scripture, and everyday life, Jim Forest opens up the mysteries of the Beatitudes. These ancient blessings, with which Christ began his Sermon on the Mount, are all aspects of communion with God. As Forest shows, they are like rungs on a ladder, each one leading up to the next. They appear at the doorway of the New testament to provide an easily memorized summary of everything that follows, right down to the crucifixion ("Blessed are you who are persecuted") and the resurrection ("Rejoice and be glad"). Upon this ladder, following Christ, we may ascend to the Kingdom of God. Forest writes: "If the Gospel is true, if the truest thing we can say is 'God is love'... then we have much to rejoice in... Those who climb the ladder of the beatitudes are in the best of company: the prophets, the martyrs and all the saints, the great cloud of witnesses." 176pp $13.00 Paper (Orbis)
